First Area Qualifiers kicks off Feb. 15

PICKERINGTON, OH – November 22, 2019 – (Motor Sports NewsWire) –  The American Motorcyclist Association and MX Sports are pleased to announce the AMA Area Qualifier and Regional Championship schedule for the 2020 AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship presented by Lucas Oil.

“The top amateur motocross riders in the U.S. will once again qualify on tracks across the nation for their shot at an AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship,” AMA Director of Racing Kevin Crowther said. “For more than 35 years, the AMA has been sanctioning the national championship on the hallowed grounds of Loretta Lynn’s Dude Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn., and we are looking forward to another year of intense competition in the Area Qualifiers and Regional Championships.”

AMA Area Qualifiers are the first step in qualifying for the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship. The 51 Area Qualifiers begin in February and continue through the end of May. Racers of all ages compete in various engine displacement classes, from 50cc to 450cc, in the hope of advancing to a Regional Championship.

The AMA Regional Championships then serve as the next step to seed riders into the annual AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship. Only riders who finish in a qualifying position at one of the 13 Regional Championship events are eligible to race the national championship at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch.

“We have assembled the best race tracks and the best organizers in America to produce the 2020 AMA Amateur National Championship area qualifier schedule,” said MX Sports Director Tim Cotter. “The competition between the hundreds of race tracks in America is very fierce. Each AMA track aspires to host one of these coveted events. The 51 Area Qualifier and 13 Regional Championship organizers are eager to greet the best amateur motocross riders in the world as they embark on their journey to The National Championship.”

The AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship is one of the longest-running motorsports championships in the country. The AMA launched the national championship program in 1975. That year, a series of regional races qualified 135 riders in three classes — 125cc, 250cc and Open — for the championship round in Baldwin, Kan. In 1982, the AMA partnered with MX Sports and the event moved to its current location at the Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. There, the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship continues to crown the country’s top amateur motocross racers every summer.
