Spoonogle, Markley are first-time winners
LEXINGTON, OH – July 9, 2019 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The American Motorcyclist Association named Christopher Spoonogle and Sam Markley as the 2019 AMA Off-Road Vintage Grand Champions on Sunday during 2019 Honda AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days presented by Avon Tyres.
The AMA Off-Road Vintage Grand Championship and AMA Off-Road Senior Vintage Grand Championship are based on cumulative points from the three vintage off-road events: hare scrambles, trials and motocross.

Spoonogle, of Ballston Spa, N.Y., said it was his goal coming into the event to win the Off-Road Vintage Grand Championship, but he doubted he had performed well enough to capture the title before it was announced to the crowd gathered at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course hanger.
“I didn’t even want to wait for the announcement,” he said. “I thought I hadn’t won, but to hear my name called was pretty amazing.”
He said he was feeling a flood of emotions after he got off the stage. He and his father worked very hard to get ready for the event. It also was his first time racing after recovering from an arm injury.
Markley, who hails from New Paris, Ind., was surprised and delighted to win the AMA Off-Road Senior Vintage Grand Championship. He said the weekend started with a gamble: He decided to campaign his 1974 Yamaha TY250 trials motorcycle in Friday’s hare scramble competition in muddy conditions.
“The trials bike was very nimble and maneuvered through the woods way easier,” he said.
Markey was grateful to the AMA for putting on the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days event.
“This is such a great venue, and I like the grand championship format with hare scrambles, motocross and trials,” he said.
2019 Honda AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days presented by Avon Tyres concluded Sunday. AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is annual event that financially supports the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation, the 501(c)(3), which raises money for the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
