MUNICH, GERMANY – September 9, 2024 – (Motor Sports NewsWire) – RM Sotheby’s is delighted to return to Munich for its eagerly anticipated sale held at one of Europe’s premier hubs, Motorworld. The event is being held on 23 November and continues the now highly successful sale held at the iconic location every November. The Munich Masterpieces Collection is a remarkable offering of 20 BMWs and EMWs, and four BMW motorbikes, spanning the eras all the way from 1933 up to 2005.

240909 1979 BMW M1 'Exclüsiv by Walter Maürer - RM Sotheby's - Munich

Undoubtedly a standout car from the collection is the 1979 BMW M1 ‘Exclüsiv by Walter Maürer. Wearing unique paintwork designed by the legendary artist Walter Maürer that, it is believed to be the only road car with his custom paintwork and a stunning example of BMW’s seminal mid-engined, Giugiaro-designed supercar. One of just 399 examples of the M1 made as a road-going homologation special, this M1 boasts a spaceframe chassis designed by Gian Paolo Dallara and a 3.5-litre inline-six producing 277 brake horsepower. It shows just 33,862 kilometres on the odometer, and according to factory records, boasts its matching numbers engine (Estimate: €450,000 – €550,000 EUR).

This is followed by another BMW icon, the 2000 BMW Z8. An excellent example of BMW’s famous retro-modern millennium roadster, this example was delivered new to Germany and is finished in Titansilber Metallic over a black leather interior, and offered with its colour-matching hardtop. Powered by a 4.9-litre “S82” V-8 engine, this example reads 48,946 kilometres on the odometer and is estimated to sell for between €175,000 – €225,000 EUR.

Also on offer is a remarkable selection of BMW 326s and 327s. This includes a 1939 BMW 327/28 Sport Cabriolet, which was delivered new to Sweden as a late-production model but was kept unregistered for some time due to the outbreak of World War II. Subject to a full restoration by the acquiring owner, it is estimated to sell for between €150,000 – €200,000 EUR. A 1954 EMW 327/2 Sport Coupé will be offered, which was East Germany’s 1950s take on the BMW 327. Delivered new to Finland, and used in Finnish rallies and ice racing events, it is estimated to sell for between €80,000 – €120,000 EUR. A 1937 BMW 326 Roadster by Drauz is also being offered from The Munich Masterpieces Collection, a beautiful pre-war BMW roadster bodied by the famous coachbuilder, Drauz, with this model seldom offered at auction (Estimate: €120,000 – €160,000 EUR). This is followed by a duo of 327s. The first is a 1954 EMW 327/2 Sport Cabriolet, which was discovered in a barn in 1994 in Finland when it was acquired by the consignor and fully restored. Offered in the pretty shade of red over black, it is estimated to sell for between €80,000 – €120,000 EUR. This would be perfectly paired with a 1954 EMW 327/2 Sport Coupé, which is another gorgeous example of the popular 327 model (Estimate: €80,000 – €120,000 EUR).

A special 1955 BMW 502 Coupé by Baur is also offered from The Munich Masterpieces Collection. Thought to be one of only 29 examples of the 502 Coupé made by Baur, it is BMW’s much-revered “Baroque Angel.” This example was formerly owned by Finnish racing driver Alexi Patama and has resided in the collection for over 30 years (Estimate: €130,000 – €180,000 EUR). This is complemented with a 1953 BMW 501-6, which was acquired by the family in 1992, and is a fine example presented in black over a cloth interior (Estimate: €20,000 – €30,000 EUR). A 1933 BMW 3/20 AM 4 Saloon is also offered from the collection, which is remarkably among the first BMWs ever produced, and was a later development of the endearing Dixi model (Estimate: €20,000 – €30,000 EUR). Another 501 will be offered, this one a 1952 BMW 501-6, which is thought to be among the first BMW 501s made, bearing the chassis number “40047” (Estimate: €20,000 – €30,000 EUR).

Another iconic BMW will be offered in the form of a 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL. One of just 500 right-hand-drive examples of the revered CSL homologation special, this example is finished in the rare shade of rare Ceylon Metallic and has been in the current collection for 25 years. It is  accompanied by a history file, owner’s manual, tool kit, jack, and spare wheel (Estimate: €120,000 – €160,000 EUR).

Some more desirable examples from the collection include a 1940 BMW 335 Cabriolet by Autenrieth. Boasting rare and desirable four-door cabriolet with bodywork by the renowned Autenrieth coachbuilder, this example is thought to be one of 420 built of all 335 body styles, with only 10 cars being bodied by Autenrieth(Estimate: €100,000 – €140,000 EUR). This is complemented with a 1965 BMW 1800 Ti/SA, which is even rarer and is believed to be one of just 200 examples and one of a mere four delivered new to Sweden (Estimate: €80,000 – €120,000 EUR).Another fine machine presented from the collection is the beautiful 1963 BMW 3200 CS by Bertone. An elegant grand tourer boasting styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro, this example is powered by a 3.2-litre V-8 engine (Estimate: €40,000 – €60,000 EUR). A 1953 EMW 340 will also be offered, which was East Germany’s answer to the BMW 326, and has resided in Finland since new (Estimate: €20,000 – €30,000 EUR). A 1962 BMW 700 Sport Coupé, will be offered, which is an increasingly rare example of BMW’s 1960s mini coupé. Being the desirable sport version with an enhanced engine producing greater 40 horsepower output, it is estimated to sell for €30,000 – €50,000 EUR.

240909 1995 BMW 850 Ci - 1988 BMW M3 - RM Sotheby's - Munich

Moving closer to the modern era, a gorgeous 1988 BMW M3 is also coming to Munich in November. A Japanese-specification example configured in left-hand-drive, this M3 is presented in Alpine White II over a black interior, features rare 16-inch split wheels, as well as just two owners from new (Estimate: €100,000 – €140,000 EUR). This is followed by a 1995 BMW 850 Ci, which is believed to have been ordered new for a sheikh in Saudi Arabia, who then changed his mind, with the car staying in Europe. Presented in Orient Blau over a blue leather interior, it is estimated to sell between €30,000 – €50,000 EUR. Additionally, a 2005 BMW M6 will be presented from the collection, which boasts a sonorous 5.0-litre V-10 engine. Finished in Sepang Bronze Metallic over a tan leather interior, it is estimated to sell for between €20,000 – €30,000 EUR.

The collection is rounded off with four BMW motorbikes, all of which will also be offered without reserve. This includes a 1972 BMW R60/5 (Estimate: €6,000 – €10,000 EUR), a 1975 BMW R90S (Estimate: €15,000 – €20,000 EUR), a 1953 BMW R35 (Estimate: €10,000 – €15,000 EUR), and a 1962 BMW R69S (Estimate: €20,000 – €25,000 EUR).
