LONDON, ENGLAND – February 1, 2022 – (Motor Sports NewsWire) – RM Sotheby’s continues to build its European leadership team with the appointment of Peter Wallman, who rejoins the company after five years of developing auction and private sales projects elsewhere in the industry. Peter rejoins at a time which has seen RM Sotheby’s return to the live auction arena with huge success on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as the continued development of its online auction business.
Peter originally joined RM in Europe in 2007 and was responsible for consigning numerous important cars and single-owner collections from around Europe, and was an integral part of the team that launched RM Auctions into Europe, helping to establish core sales for the business in London, Maranello, Monaco, and Villa Erba. Notable among his consignments were the Prevosti Collection of 20, mainly Italian, sports and GT cars from the 1960s at the inaugural London auction in 2007, the ex-Park Lane Showroom McLaren F1 which broke all records in 2008, the ex-Fangio 1956 Works Ferrari 290 MM by Scaglietti, which at the time in 2015 established a new auction sales price for RM Sotheby’s, selling for $28,050,000, as well as the Laidlaw Collection of sports racing cars.
Peter is a dedicated enthusiast of classic cars as well as classic Riva wooden boats, and boasts extensive knowledge of sports and racing cars from the 1950s and ’60s. Aside from his car knowledge, Peter has extensive experience in business development, helping to establish the company’s profile across multiple markets and developing partnerships with both leading global brands and the company’s integral partnership with Sotheby’s. Peter took on the role of Managing Director of RM Sotheby’s in April 2016, heading up the team based in London.
Speaking of his return to RM Sotheby’s, Peter says: “My approach to the business is driven through a genuine love and enthusiasm for the cars and the people. I’m delighted to be back at RM Sotheby’s, as it’s now so much easier for me to see how the company leads this industry, having benefitted from five years away and viewed through a slightly different lens. What really motivates me is to be part of a great business that has grown organically and has always been creative, innovative, pragmatic, and, from the ground up, driven by enthusiasm and knowledge of the product. More recently through its Global Partnership with Sotheby’s, RM has benefitted from expanded international reach, a burgeoning client base, multi-category sales combining a varied offer for the connoisseur, and considerable financial clout, way beyond its nearest competitors.”
He continues: “But let’s not forget that this is a business that has a soul and is underpinned by beautiful objects and experiences, a passion for storytelling, and a love for historic and collectable cars of all ages. It’s a world where people have fun, swap tales, and make friends, and as a business, our role is to help let that hobby thrive.”
Gord Duff, Global Head of Auctions at RM Sotheby’s, said: “I am personally delighted that Peter is back in the business. He has incredible knowledge and an astute understanding of the luxury goods sector and the broader environment in which we operate. Peter will be an integral part of the team in Europe, working alongside Managing Director Greg Anderson and the rest of the leadership team.”
Peter is part of the management team which will define RM Sotheby’s strategy for growth in the coming years across all areas of business, from innovative live sales to an industry-leading online sales platform, the burgeoning Private Sales Division, and leading partnerships and collaborations that will help to define RM Sotheby’s as the pre-eminent leaders in the market and as a company that is working tirelessly to support the hobby that underpins it.
