Defending Top Fuel Event Winner Josh Hart Looks to Jump in Title Hunt at Betway NHRA Carolina Nationals

Josh Hart - Betway NHRA Carolina Nationals (678)

CONCORD, NC – Sept 22, 2022 – (Motor Sports NewsWire) – A year ago, Josh Hart played the spoiler role perfectly in his fall visit to zMAX Dragway during his rookie season, beating a trio of Top Fuel title contenders en route to second career NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series victory. Now in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs for the first time, Hart hopes a second straight victory at the Betway NHRA Carolina Nationals can put him in the thick of the championship conversation.

Hart’s playoff debut in his 11,000-horsepower R+L Carriers dragster didn’t go as planned last weekend at Maple Grove Raceway, with the rising star falling in the opening round. That dropped Hart to seventh in points, but this weekend represents a perfect bounce-back weekend, especially considering his zMAX Dragway resumé.

Last year, Hart beat the likes of Mike Salinas and points leader Justin Ashley en route to the final round, and then got past former world champ Brittany Force, who had been the points leader in the class for the bulk of the 2022 season, to collect a second win in his storybook rookie season. Hart just missed out on qualifying for the Countdown to the Championship last year, but he’s been determined to make the most of his first postseason appearance this season.

“We didn’t start the Countdown the way we planned but this R+L Carriers team isn’t hanging our heads,” Hart said. “We won this race last year and I have a lot of confidence we can do that again. We have to start making up rounds, but I truly believe anything is possible. Our goal is to make quick runs starting on Friday night and start chipping away at the points lead.”

Hart (Top Fuel), Tim Wilkerson (Funny Car) and Kyle Koretsky (Pro Stock) won last year’s playoff race and this weekend’s will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1 (FS1), including eliminations at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday. It is the second of six races in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs and Hart is thinking big heading to Charlotte.

He’s also looking for his first win of the 2022 season in a year that’s featured plenty of consistency in a loaded Top Fuel field. That put Hart fifth heading into the Countdown to the Championship and even after the first-round hiccup last weekend, he remains just 33 points out of fourth.

Hart showed his talent last year, but nothing comes easy in a class that also features four-time defending world champ Steve Torrence, who has dominated in Charlotte in recent seasons, Indy winner Antron Brown, Leah Pruett, Tony Schumacher and Reading winner Austin Prock, who jumped all the way to sixth in points with his win last weekend. Hart, though, has enjoyed every minute of the high-intensity moments and has embraced performing on a high level in Top Fuel.

“We have learned a lot this season and we are still a young team,” Hart said. “The success we had in my rookie year was not a fluke and we have a championship caliber group. Thanks to R+L Carriers, TechNet and all our sponsors I am living my dream of racing against the best Top Fuel teams in the world. We are going to keep proving that we belong. Charlotte is a great facility, and I can’t wait to get back there and start turning on win lights.”

In Funny Car, 16-time world champ John Force will look to jump back in the title in Charlotte and also sweep the two races at zMAX Dragway this year. Force won in the spring at the four-wide race for the second straight and he has been the No. 1 qualifier at the state-of-the-art facility for the last three races in his 11,000-horsepower PEAK Chevrolet Camaro SS.

His team certainly feels at home in Charlotte, but Force will need a big weekend to track down teammate Robert Hight, who has enjoyed a dominant season thus far. That continued last weekend as Hight rolled to the win to open the playoffs and giving the points leader seven victories thus far in 2022. His lead stands at 97 points over Force, who is currently in fourth behind Matt Hagan and defending world champ Ron Capps as well. Other contenders include Bob Tasca III, Wilkerson, J.R. Todd, and Cruz Pedregon, but Force could make some noise with another big performance in Charlotte.

“Everyone is in the hunt, (but) Robert may just run away with this. But this PEAK Chevy, we’re still in the mix, still five races to go,” Force said. “We head right to Charlotte where we’ll have another shot at it. (We’ll) keep on trying to get the job done.”

Koretsky enjoyed a dream weekend last year at Charlotte in Pro Stock, picking up his first career victory in Pro Stock. To repeat, he’ll have to get past the likes of points leader Erica Enders, who won in Reading, defending world champ Greg Anderson, Dallas Glenn, rookie Camrie Caruso and Troy Coughlin Jr.

The Betway NHRA Carolina Nationals also will feature thrilling competition in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, which includes some of the sport’s top drivers, as well as the FuelTech NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by D-Wagon. Jose Gonzalez won in Charlotte a year ago en route to his first world title in the class. Fans in Charlotte can also enjoy the exciting Mountain Motor Pro Stock category as they bring their powerful 800-plus cubic-inch engines to zMAX Dragway. On Saturday, fans can attend Nitro School to learn more about how the cars operate and reach their thrilling speeds.

Race fans at zMAX Dragway can enjoy the special pre-race ceremonies that introduce and celebrate each of the drivers racing for the prestigious Wally on Sunday and includes the fan favorite SealMaster Track Walk. The final can’t-miss experience of any NHRA event is the winner’s circle celebration on Sunday after racing concludes, where fans are invited to congratulate the Betway NHRA Carolina Nationals event winners.

As always, fans also get an exclusive pit pass to the most powerful and sensory-filled motorsports attraction on the planet in Charlotte. This unique opportunity gives fans a unique chance to see teams in action and service their hot rods between rounds, get autographs from their favorite NHRA drivers, and more. Fans can also visit NHRA’s popular Nitro Alley and Manufacturers Midway, where sponsors and race vendors create an exciting atmosphere that includes interactive displays, simulated competitions, merchandise, food, and fun for the entire family. The new Pep Boys midway display includes tire change challenges, oil change challenges, a slot car track, and much more, adding even more excitement to the midway.

NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series qualifying will feature one round at 6:30 p.m. ET on Friday, Sept. 23, and the final two rounds of qualifying on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1:30 and 5:15 p.m. Final eliminations are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, Sept. 25. Television coverage includes qualifying action on FS1 at 7:00 p.m. ET on Friday, 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, and then eliminations on FS1 at 3:00 p.m. ET on Sunday.
