OCEANSIDE, CA – September 14, 2020 – (Motor Sports NewsWire) – The UTV World Championship is proud to announce that Scott “Weatherman” Steinberger and Ralph “WeatherMex” Barrera will lead race-day communications at the 2020 UTV World Championship presented by Polaris RZR this October 7th-11th. The announcement marks the first time The Weatherman has assisted in race-day communications for the UTV World Championship since the event’s birth in 2015.
PCI will be onsite to provide their industry leading service and support to all racers, pit crews and fans. Communications. Navigation. Safety equipment. PCI will have their full service rig at both the AZ West UTV Festival on Thursday, October 8th and at the start/finish line on Friday, October 9th and Saturday, October 10th. PCI Race Radios will stream the Weatherman Relay channel via Mixlr on UTVWorldChampionship.com so fans can tune in worldwide and listen to The UTV World Championship via their computer or smartphone.
The storied history of “The Weatherman” begins with Bob Steinberger, who first began providing communications at the 1974 Mint 400 by putting communications in the vehicles of Bill Stroppe, Joe MacPherson and Walker Evans. He sent up three weather balloons with five hundred feet of coax attached and the first successful radio relay from a pit was made. It is believed that it was Joe MacPherson who couldn’t remember his name, so he dubbed him “Weatherman” on the radio. The rest is history and Bob’s iconic status has been reached through nearly half a century of work with the communications company he founded, PCI Race Radios.
Bob passed away in 2017, handing over the torch to his son Scott Steinberger who carries on the voice of off-road racing. Scott has been racing since 1988. From Mini-Mag, Class 7, Protruck to Trophy Truck, he understands racing and the importance of quality products to get you to the finish line. PCI Race Radios will stream the Weatherman Relay channel via Mixlr, so fans can tune in worldwide and listen to the UTV World Championship.
“It’s people like The Weatherman that make off-road racing such a great culture. You have to be extremely dedicated and part crazy to pull off the radio relay system The Weatherman created. We have a tremendous amount of respect for the commitment Scott and PCI Race Radios has made to off-road racing and we are happy to have The Weatherman back at the UTV World Championship,” stated UTV World Championship CEO Matt Martelli.
“PCI Radios is proud to come support this new event in Lake Havasu City. These being all new race courses, my lone responsibility on race day is the safety of our racers, spectators and everyone involved in the event,” commented Steinberger. “I’m looking forward to race day and sharing the Weatherman channel worldwide!”
