Sholto has an enviable breadth of experience across the classic car market, with exceptional car knowledge from veterans through to modern supercars. A trained auctioneer, Sholto has conducted over 60 auctions from the rostrum and has personally overseen over £200 million in motor car sales. This includes personal highlights such as selling the 1960 DB4GT ‘Jet’ Coupe for £3,249,500, a 1931 Bugatti Type 55 Roadster for €4,600,000, and the ex-Scuderia Ferrari, ex-Richard-Shuttleworth, 1935 Donington Grand Prix-winning 1932-34 Alfa Romeo Tipo B Grand Prix Monoposto, which sold for £4,593,500.

Like so many within the RM Sotheby’s team, cars are both his professional vocation and his private passion.

With a father who specialized in dealing in Bentleys and Rolls-Royces, Sholto was surrounded by cars from an early age. Having gained some initial experience with world-renowned Rolls-Royce / Bentley specialists P&A Wood, Sholto then moved into the memorabilia department at Bonhams. It was from there that he rose up the ranks to become Director of the department, being a leading light in the UK auction market.

Greg Anderson, Managing Director EMEA, says: “We are delighted to welcome Sholto to the team. Already boasting a wealth of experience, he will no doubt help our ambitious growth plans in the UK. He boasts a proven track record, having been instrumental in many of the successful sales Bonhams has had over the years, and we look forward to seeing him join the team in our London office very soon.”

Speaking of joining the RM Sotheby’s team, Gilbertson says: “With all the experience I have gained over the past two decades, the time is absolutely right for me to join RM Sotheby’s. I have seen Sotheby’s European presence grow at an unbelievable rate since the company launched in 2007, and it is clear that the business has taken a leading position in Europe. I’m thrilled at the prospect of joining the team and putting all my experience into developing the areas of the market where there is still so much potential, not least the United Kingdom.”

Sholto will help to continue to grow RM Sotheby’s reputation as the leading collector car auction house globally, forming part of the formidable management team that heads up the European division of RM Sotheby’s.
