BLENHEIM, ONTARIO, CANADA – May 29, 2020 – (Motor Sports NewsWire) – As RM Sotheby’s enters the closing date for its first major online sale of the summer, Online Only: Driving into Summer, the company is pleased to announce the addition of the Online Only: Pedal Power Auction to its schedule and provide a look ahead at its summer events with the release of the Online Only Calendar: Summer 2020.
The Online Only summer auction calendar outlines RM Sotheby’s diverse lineup of events set between the end of May and August, all featuring a variety of motor cars and memorabilia offered via the company’s proprietary digital auction platform on rmsothebys.com. The auction house will wrap up its summer events with Online Only: SHIFT / Monterey, open for bidding 6-15 August and featuring the most significant and valuable cars ever offered in an online auction.
Driving into Summer: 21-29 May
Kicking off the summer auction calendar, RM Sotheby’s first car auction specifically curated by its team of specialists for the Online Only platform—Driving into Summer—offers over 200 diverse collector cars and a selection of memorabilia, with entries led by Ferrari supercars, including a 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO and 2003 Ferrari Enzo. Final lots for the one-week, time-based auction close for bidding in a staggered format on 29 May.
The European Sale featuring the Petitjean Collection: 3-11 June
RM Sotheby’s Online Only: The European Sale featuring the Petitjean Collection, originally set to take place in March as the company’s second annual live Essen auction, will open for bidding via rmsothebys.com on 3-11 June. The sale comprises over 185 fine collector cars and a selection of memorabilia, parts, and collectibles, ranging from an incredible pre-war Bugatti Type 57 Cabriolet to an as-new, track-ready 2020 Porsche 935 ‘Martini’, along with the nearly 100 sought-after cars presented from the single-owner Petitjean Collection and offered entirely without reserve.
Pedal Power: 17-24 June
New to the company’s roster of summer sales, the Online Only: Pedal Power Auction features 53 pedal-powered vehicles, including cars, trucks, boats, and airplanes dating from 1927 to 1977, offered entirely without reserve. Open for bidding at 1:00 p.m. EDT on 17 June, with staggered lot closure beginning at 11:00 a.m. EDT on 24 June, the unique collection is offered on behalf of pedal car expert Bruce Callis.
With the assistance of his grandson, Michael Ready, Callis restored many of the kid-powered toys offered within the Pedal Power collection. Callis and Ready researched, disassembled, cleaned, and repaired nearly every pedal car they could find and acquire. For more detailed work, Callis hired skilled craftsmen to perform the bodywork necessary to restore the pedal cars to as-new, museum-quality condition. Displayed for two years at the McLean County Museum of History in Bloomington, Illinois, the Pedal Power collection is impressive not only for its variety but its depth. Though the majority of the collection was completely restored, Callis and Ready left some examples unrestored for comparison. The unrestored pedal cars emphasize how uncommon it is to find pristine playthings of any kind.
Leading the Pedal Power highlights is the 1935 Skippy Racer. The American National Company of Toledo, Ohio, modeled this pedal car after popular race car designs of the 1930s. Presented in original condition, the twin, streamlined front fenders move with the steering wheel input. Additional highlights include a 1929 Scout Airplane, a deluxe pedal tricycle constructed of hardwood with an aluminum nose cone, propeller, seat, and wings by the Sidway-Topliff Company and presented in original condition; a three-wheeled 1968 Skipper Run-A-Bout, which includes a battery-operated outboard motor, chrome-plated rails, and a pennant tied with realistic rope; and the high-end 1955 Austin J-40 Roadster, featuring an openable hood and trunk, spare tire, working horn, and battery-powered lights.
A Lifetime of Porsche Memorabilia: 23-30 June
RM Sotheby’s will also offer an outstanding single-owner collection of Porsche memorabilia across two Online Only auction events, A Lifetime of Porsche Memorabilia, Part I and Part II, with the first offering open for bidding on 23-30 June and Part II to follow in July. Offered entirely without reserve, the offering comprises over 500 Porsche collectibles curated over a lifetime and offered from a highly regarded private collection.
RM Sotheby’s will also be making an exciting forthcoming announcement alongside the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). More information coming next week.
RM Sotheby’s will continue to update the attached Online Only Calendar of Events for Summer 2020 as new auctions are announced.
