Auction Lineup to Include Ex-Cunningham Team Lister-Jaguar ‘Knobbly,’ Ferrari Daytona Raced at Le Mans and more
WALWORTH, WI – August 15, 2017 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – A wide selection of notable racers are slated to cross the auction block when Mecum Auctions returns Aug. 16-19 to the Del Monte Golf Course for its annual Daytime Auction in Monterey, California. Set to be hits among dedicated racing fans, the racers slated for Monterey include those of significant provenance and championship-winning histories.
Three notable racers from the Colin Comer Collection are slated to cross the auction block on Thursday, a highlight of the racers on offer being a championship-winning 1958 Lister-Jaguar “Knobbly” (Lot F75) bearing serial number BHL102. One of just nine original Knobbly Jaguars produced, it is one of only two campaigned by the Briggs Cunningham team from 1958-60, driven by famed racers such as Stirling Moss, Ed Crawford and Briggs Cunningham himself. Other prominent racers from the Colin Comer Collection include a 1964 Eisert “Harrison Special” Indy Car (Lot F81) and the Bud Moore Engineering-built NASCAR-raced 1993 Ford Thunderbird (Lot F82) driven by Geoff Bodine to a win at the 1993 Save-Mart 300.
Among significant Porsche racers up for auction is a 1976 Porsche 934/935 IMSA (Lot S64) raced at Le Mans in 1976 and 1977, and driven by the Whittington brothers, which is expected to bring $800,000 to $1 million. Other significant Porsche racers up for auction include a 1977 Porsche 934.5/935 IMSA Swap Shop (Lot S99), which placed third overall at the 1981 12 Hours of Sebring and is estimated to sell for between $750,000 and $1 million, and a 1977 Porsche 935 Factory Race Car (Lot S90) with four first-place finishes at Nurburgring that is expected to hammer somewhere between $1.6 and $1.75 million.
Other racers with prominent race history include a 2011 Lotus Evora GTE Racer (Lot F13) driven by Townsend Bell in the American Le Mans series and a 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona (Lot S111), which placed eighth overall and fifth in the GT Class at the 1972 4 Hours of Le Mans and is estimated will sell for $1.25 to $1.65 million.
Mecum’s Daytime Auction in Monterey will include 600 vehicles further headlined by Ferrari LaFerraris, Bugatti Veyrons and a 2010 Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita, to name a few. The auction is open to buyers, sellers and spectators. Bidder registration is available online in advance for $100, $200 after auction start, and includes admission for two to each auction day. General admission tickets are available in advance online for $20 per person, per day, and for $30 at the door and online once the auction begins; children 12 and younger receive complimentary admission. Doors open daily at 8 a.m. with the vehicle auction beginning at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16, and at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 17-19 Portions of the auction will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network with a live stream of the entire auction presented at Mecum.com.
