ROME, GA – September 1, 2016 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The FIM Motocross World Championship is set to make its highly anticipated return to the United States this Saturday, September 3, for the penultimate round of the 2016 season at Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina. Located just a short drive outside of the beautiful city of Charlotte, the speedway that is world-famous for hosting NASCAR stars will welcome the world’s best motocross athletes for the first time since the facility opened in 1960. The 16th round of the season is shaping up to be one of the deepest fields in the history of the sport as American riders like Autotrader/Monster Energy/Yamaha’s Justin Barcia will face European star and current points leader Tim Gajser aboard his HRC Honda.
Pirelli, which has been crowned World Champion an astonishing 66-times, will have its complete lineup of tires on hand, such as the all-new SCOPRION™ MX32™ PRO that has been successful in capturing multiple podiums on North American soil this season. The North Carolina-based Autotrader/Monster Energy/Yamaha squad has confirmed that its three-rider team, consisting of Barcia, Weston Peick and Phil Nicoletti will compete.
Barcia, who is carrying the confidence of back-to-back second place finishes in the Pro Motocross Championship, will lead the way for Pirelli USA as he prepares to challenge fellow Pirelli MXGP teammates of current MX1 points leader Gajser and Red Bull KTM’s eight-time World Champion Antonio Cairoli. Barcia has been notorious for his strong starting capabilities, which could certainly play a huge factor when the gate drops this weekend.
Peick and Nicoletti will both be making their MXGP debut as they compete alongside Barcia under the lights on Saturday. Peick has been putting in a strong showing the past several races, consistently battling for position near the top five. The Californian is certainly not afraid to bang bars with his aggressive riding style and superb fitness.
Much like Barcia, Nicoletti is no stranger to relying on the traction of his SCOPRION™ MX tires to lead the 40-rider field through the first corner. He is hot off of his two best races of the season at Budds Creek and Ironman, including a career-high fifth place overall in the 2016 Pro Motocross Championship 450 Class overall standings.
The opening motos from MXGP of the Americas will kick off on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 5pm ET, while second motos are set to begin at 8pm ET.
