Honda Continues To Pace Indianapolis 500 Practice

  • Ryan Hunter-Reay tops speeds in second full day of practice
  • Six Honda drivers, three Honda teams in top 10
  • Alexander Rossi runs 15th, continues to lead rookie field

Ryan Hunter-Reay, 2014 Indianapolis 500 champion, led the way for Honda and his Andretti Autosport team Wednesday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as 33 drivers and teams completed the second full day of practice in preparation for the 100th running of the Memorial Day Classic.

After steady rain on Tuesday prevented any on-track activity, practice resumed today at the “Brickyard” under near-ideal conditions, with Hunter-Reay pacing the field with a best lap of 228.202 mph in his Honda. His Andretti Autosport teammate, Carlos Munoz, ended the day second at 228.066 mph, while Gabby Chaves rounded out the top five for Honda and Dale Coyne Racing by posting a lap of 226.889 mph. Townsend Bell and Marco Andretti recorded the seventh and ninth-fastest speeds, respectively, with Graham Rahal rounding out the top 10. Alexander Rossi was again fastest of the five rookie drivers in the field, 15th overall.

Ryan Hunter-Reay (#28 Andretti Autosport Honda) fastest in Indy 500 Wednesday Practice: “It’s nice to have the number 28 DHL Honda up at the front, especially here at Indy. This is what we wait for all year – to get back here in Indy and start working on the car and build the energy of the biggest race in the word. We’re working through things with our set up; just getting into the mix and getting into traffic. It’s been a fun day – a challenging one at times. When that wind switches around, it certainly throws you for a loop, but I was definitely pretty happy with the car at the end of the day.”
