The docket for the Halloween auction runs the gamut of automotive production, from quintessential American classics through to superb European sports and GT cars. ICONIC POSTER CARS
Poster cars from the 1970s and 80s have been trending in recent months, as those who adorned their bedroom walls with pictures of these cars during their youth are now in the financial position to realize their dreams. When it comes to poster cars of the 1980s in particular, there is perhaps nothing more iconic than the Lamborghini Countach. Designed as a successor to the Lamborghini Miura, the Countach turned the automotive world completely upside down when it was unveiled at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Lamborghini released an updated and slightly restyled version of its celebrated Countach, which went on to become the most desirable iteration of the car in the eyes of many. The Hilton Head Island auction will present an exceptionally original example of this model, a 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary Edition. Finished in highly desirable white with a black leather interior, the vehicle on offer was delivered new to the United States. Presented in remarkably well-preserved and maintained condition, it shows just 10,900 km from new and is expected to garner strong interest from collectors when it crosses the auction block (Est. $340,000 – $380,000).
Other notable poster cars slated for the sale include:
- an attractive 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS, striking in Silver over Red and fitted with desirable Daytona style seats and fender flares, which were added after the car left Maranello (Est, $290,000 – $330,000);
- a stunning, black on black 1977 Ferrari 308 GTB, a fantastic example of a first-year 308 and one of the last great carbureted Ferraris, showing just 2700 miles (Est. $100,000 – $125,000); and
- an instantly recognizable 1982 DeLorean DMC-12; best identified by its appearance in “Back to the Future”, the DeLorean is known for its distinctive gullwing doors and iconic stainless steel body. The example on offer is presented in largely original condition (Est. $25,000 – $30,000).
For those with a penchant for recent design and performance, Auctions America’s Hilton Head Island event also features a number of modern collectibles. Among standout lots are an ‘as new’ 2002 BMW Z8 Roadster, one of the lowest mileage examples in existence with a mere 543 miles (Est. $280,000 – $320,000); and, a well-documented 2002 Porsche 911 GT2 Coupe, built with a 3.6 liter turbocharged engine, capable of propelling the car to a blisteringly fast 198 mph (Est. $140,000 – $160,000).
Race fans will argue there is perhaps no better example of modern performance and engineering than an authentic NASCAR, and certainly won’t be disappointed by the example set for the October 31 sale, the race-winning 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo – Certified Jimmie Johnson NASCAR Racecar. Raced by Johnson during the 2003 through 2006 seasons, this car never placed outside the top ten. The winner of the 2005 Budweiser Shootout at Daytona, it also holds two additional top-five finishes. Restored with the collector in mind, the car comes complete with a long list of VIP experiences, presenting a rare opportunity to acquire a genuine piece of NASCAR history (Est. $150,000 – $175,000). Also offered from the endurance racing category is a very early 2003 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe – 24 Hours of Le Mans Pace Car, one of only two Pace Cars built for use at Le Mans in 2003 (Est. $50,000 – $60,000); and, 2003 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe – 24 Hours of Le Mans Safety Car, one of four Safety Cars used at the same event (Est. $30,000 – $40,000).
