Malcolm Smith Racing Places Well In Primm, Podiums at
Full Gas And Wins Silver State 300!
IRVINE, CA – May 11, 2015 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The Ox Motorsports/MSR team of Colton Udall and Mark Samuels followed up their 1-2 sweep at the first Baja Sur 500 with another big weekend at the Big6 Grand Prix. Presented by the Shamrocks in the shadow of Sin City, the fifth round of the 2015 Big6 Grand Prix Series was held in Primm, Nevada. Despite a bit of bad luck in the beginning, MSR ended up going big.
The West Coast GP got under way with defending champ Eric Yorba grabbing the lead and MSR’s Udall running second. Colton continued to hound Yorba for the first half of the race, keeping him within 20 seconds. After the pit stop necessitated when his goggles were getting soaked in an overwatered turn, Colton put the hammer down. He caught Yorba within a lap, put the pass on and pulled out a comfortable lead. “I guess I need to start doing sprints when I train so I can get out there sooner,” he said from the top of the podium. “But if I’m patient, it all ends the same.”
At the end, it was Udall with the win, Yorba second and Ryan Reina third. MSR’s Mark Samuels would come home 6th. It wasn’t just MSR’s pro racers who hit the jackpot in Primm. Our own Paul Perebijnos pulled off the Vet Heavyweight win for Team ProTaper/MSR! “We are proud to be the title sponsor for the Big6 events and it is fun to go out and mix it up with the kids sometimes,” says Team MSR captain and Brand Manager Nick McBride.
Big6 racers now get a summer vacation. Next up will be the Viewfinders GP, the 6th round of the series, which will be held October 3rd in Ridgecrest, CA.
MSR’s Layne Michael Claims Podium Position At The Full Gas Sprint Enduro
A late addition to the Kenda Full Gas Sprint Enduro Series, the race in Newburg, West Virginia also served as the East Coast AMA ISDE Qualifier. Although Team MSR racer Layne Michael had already been named to the Junior Trophy Team for Six Days, there were plenty of other riders attempting to qualify for the Club, Senior and Women’s teams to compete in Slovakia. More than 30 racers from as far as Oregon raced Le tter of Intent (LOI) class.
“It was a great opportunity to see how I measure up to America’s top ISDE finisher last year, Kailub Russell, and Thad DuVall who will both be riding for Team USA’s Trophy Team,” said Layne. “Although I didn’t win, I did learn a lot that will help when we go for the gold in Slovakia.” Factory Beta’s Cory Buttrick taking the E2 class, and overall LOI wins on the weekend.
- Kailub Russell – 1:35:14.927
- Russell Bobbitt – 1:37:17.483
- Layne Michael – 1:37:36.835
The Kenda Full Gas Sprint Enduro Series will resume with its 3rd-round on July 18-19 in Indiana.
Bell Rings In Silver State 300 Win
What A Difference A Year Makes
Last year Robby Bell let a mental lull cost him the win at the Best In The Desert Silver State 300. This weekend Bell came back fully focused and claimed a resounding victory in eastern Nevada. Redemption was sweet for the Team MSR desert racer and his co-rider Ricky Brabec on the N1 Kawasaki.
“After 300 miles, I was so close, last year,” said Bell from the top of the podium. An unlucky 13 seconds was the margin of defeat last year. “After realizing how close I was to the win I was definitely a little bummed I wasn’t able to find 13 seconds out on the course somewhere, last year.” This year he found the speed and the focus to turn that 13 second gap into a 1.38 advantage over the P1 Kawasaki of Chris Brown and Shane Esposito for the overall win.
The 2015 General Tire “Vegas to Reno” is the next race in the Best In The Desert Series. “The Longest Off-Road Race in the United States” will be August 13-15.
