BOWLING GREEN, KY – April 08, 2015 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The “American Sportscar Challenge” draws teams to the Corvette Museum’s new track. Spring showers on Friday the 13th couldn’t dampen spirits as racers mingled around a cauldron of chili for a drivers’ meeting on the night before the WRL season opener at NCM Motorsports Park in Bowling Green. Saturday morning brought more of the same – precipitation and smiling faces – as cars left grid behind the pace car. Once the green flag fell, the lighter, lower powered cars took advantage of a wet and technical West course while the higher powered cars struggled to get a grip on the pavement. As conditions improved over the nine hour race, things started to fall into place as the GP1 Triple Nine BMW took control the of the overall lead with solid driving and an unconventional choice of rain tires. But the cars getting everyone’s attention were the #252 E30 of SMM Racing which laid down blistering fast laps in the rain early in the day carrying them to a first place finish in GP2 and third place overall, and Spartan Racing’s M42-powered BMW taking command of GP3 and landing fourth overall with consistently quick passes. GP4 winner Handiman Motorsports got the most out of their #36 VW Sirocco despite sliding off track and finding a tire wall early in the race.
Sunday was literally full of sun, and the dry track allowed the #361 Toyota MR2 of McKibben Motorsports to shine for most of the day in GP1 until an overheating issue took them out of the race in the early afternoon. Seven hours of very close racing in all four classes culminated in an exciting finish as the SMM BMW dropped from first to third in GP2 on a splash and go with 3 laps left, and the #120 Kentucky Spirits 300ZX charged into first in GP1 after the #117 Corvette of Braunschweig pitted for an unplanned a caliper repair with 30 minutes left in the race. In GP3, the Holy Rollers #66 Honda edged out the Spartan Racing BMW by one lap, and the Futility Motorsports #79 Mercury Bobcat held on for first place in GP4. The tight 2-mile circuit, excellent race strategy and great driving resulted in the top 6 teams finishing one lap apart in the overall standings.
It was all smiles again at the awards ceremony where trophies and jokes were delivered and teams walked away with generous contingency awards from some of WRL’s sponsors including Hawk Performance, Yokohama Tire, CoolShirt Systems and Hunsaker USA. Learn more at http://www.RaceWRL.com.
Of Note: This event marked the first time a Corvette competed in wheel-to-wheel racing at the National Corvette Museum’s new race track. The red, white and black Braunschweig #117 Corvette finished 2nd on Saturday and 3rd on Sunday.
About The World Racing League
World Racing League (WRL) is a grassroots endurance racing series based on the idea that amateur road racing should be accessible and enjoyable, without unnecessary hassles or barriers to participate, and without losing the flavor and nature of real competition. WRL is focused on one thing: Being the best amateur endurance racing series in North America. Club racing cars, vintage racing cars, budget racing cars – if they are safe and fall within WRL’s power-to-weight limits, then they are also World Racing League cars. PT, STO, STL, GT, Production, IT, SM, Chump and LeMons are just a few of the types of cars that fit into a class.
