Roland Sands Design Women’s Wear: Better By Definition
LOS ALAMITOS, CA – November 20, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – By definition, a maven is a trusted expert in a particular field who seeks to pass knowledge on to others. It also proved to be the perfect name for the first women’s leather jacket from Roland Sands Design. The team at RSD has taken all the knowledge gained from producing instant classics for the men’s market with their 2012 Main Set collection and translated it into the new Maven jacket for women. However, this is more than just a cut-down version of a man’s jacket… much more!
“We took classic Café racer styling cues and created a jacket that is form-fitted to the female body shape,” explains Roland Sands. “Functionality first, but classic good looks are a very close second place,” says the former racer turned-designer. An adjustable zip waist and comfort flex panels under the arms at the chest enable women riders to further tailor the Maven to their form. “Even though it looks great off the bike and will be worn as a fashion accessory, the Maven is meant to be worn on a motorcycle,” Roland is quick to add. Pre-curved sleeves, relaxed “racer” collar and a dropped back are part of the performance riding fit designed into the jacket.
Additional highlights for real riders include pockets in the elbows, shoulders and back for optional RSD armor inserts. Zip-close cuffs, interior stuff pocket, zippered front pockets and even a sleeve zip pocket are nice touches as well. Perforated leather trim and a gold satin lining complete the package. “As with any piece in the RSD line, the Maven is riding gear built with a parallel of fashion and function,” says Sands.
Ensuring that the Maven feels as good as it functions, it is constructed of 1.1mm/1.3mm top grain cowhide. The natural properties of RSD leathers, combined with their specialized hand-finishing techniques, mean that every single leather panel will be original and look slightly different in terms of shade. “The leather is pre-oiled, washed, then hand-finished with wax and oiled again,” explains Roland. “The finish will react differently depending on climate, amount of usage and age… guaranteeing each jacket really is one of a kind.”
Although the Maven looks and feels like a million bucks, MSRP is only $560. Available in a full range of sizes and a choice of Black or Tobacco colorways (Cream and Oxblood coming in the spring of 2013).

Sands is from Long Beach, California. His diverse upbringing encompasses just about every aspect of the motorcycle industry. His first motorcycle was an RM50 dirtbike given to him on his 5th birthday, on which, after just minutes of riding, he broke a bone… but fell in love with it anyway. His love of speed on two wheels took him to the professional racing ranks for 10 years. He set multiple track records around the world and was the 1998 American Motorcyclist Association 250GP champion. However, 32 broken bones later, Roland decided to trade in his racing leathers for a hammer, pencil and computer. He began designing and building motorcycles and custom products. In 2005, he founded Roland Sands Design. Sands’ designs are a mixture of sportbike and chopper influences and he has played a pivotal role in popularizing high performance custom bikes. Roland and his designs (motorcycles and products) have earned many accolades throughout the years, including three V-Twin Wheel Design of the year awards; V-Twin Control Design; Chip Foose Design of Excellence Award in Sturgis; 2nd, 3rd and 4th place in the Modified Harley class at the World Championship of Custom Bike Building; V-Twin Trendsetter of the Year award; Biker Build Off Champion on the Discovery Channel; Biker Build Off Rookie of the year and the 2Wheel Tuner Brappy Award. Roland and the RSD fleet of custom motorcycles have been featured in more than 500 magazine articles world-wide, and on more than 100 magazine covers. He attends most American motorcycle rallies and events year round, as well as multiple International shows. Sands has also starred in a variety of TV shows including Nitro Circus, Chopper Nation, Biker Build Off, American Thunder and many others.
